Ultraleap hand tracking integrated in Goertek’s new VR headset reference design

Posted; January 4, 2024

The new reference design is the world’s first instance of Ultraleap hand tracking running on shared cameras

Ultraleap is working with Goertek, the leading headset manufacturer in VR, to bring to market the next generation reference design for virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) headsets with pre-integrated hand tracking from Ultraleap.

This new reference design combines Goertek’s best in class design and headset manufacturing capabilities with support for Gemini, Ultraleap’s world leading hand tracking platform. The Gemini platform is recognized as the fastest, most advanced and reliable hand tracking on the market. Crucially, this new reference design from Goertek makes it even easier and faster for OEMs to bring world class hand tracking interactions to their customers.

The reference design is available now. For the first time, Ultraleap’s computer vision and machine learning models allow hand tracking to run on the cameras used for SLAM and controller tracking with LED lighting. This reduces the cost of integration to OEMs and headset manufacturers substantially, while still delivering the highly differentiated tracking performance synonymous with Ultraleap hand tracking.

Hand tracking has become a mandatory feature in new headset products, leading to a recognition that natural gestures are a superior interaction method. Precise and high-quality hand tracking significantly increases the ability to make users feel more immersed in training, enterprise and consumer experiences.

Tom Carter, CEO and co-founder at Ultraleap said: “We believe natural hand interactions will be to VR what touch was to smartphones. Integrating Ultraleap’s hand tracking directly onto existing camera sensors makes it very easy for customers to design and launch new headset products. This outstanding collaboration means that companies looking to launch new VR headset products can now easily develop a headset built with the world’s best hand tracking from the world’s leading headset manufacturer. It’s an unbeatable combination.”

Marvin Chang, Corporate Vice President, Global Head of Marketing, Goertek, Inc. said: “Goertek is committed to providing excellent overall solutions for XR headsets, and this integration with Ultraleap shows that we can bring the best in class cutting edge technology, like hand tracking, in a manufacturable form factor direct to the world’s biggest OEMs. The timing of this new reference design with Goertek reflects the demand for natural interaction that we are seeing all across the XR industry, which will enable OEMs to reduce time-to-market for their next-generation VR headset with brilliant hand tracking interactions.”

Ultraleap’s world-leading hand tracking technology has been developed over 10 years using machine learning and computer vision. The technology is applicable to a wide range of industries, including extended reality, automotive, digital signage, industrial automation, consumer electronics and location-based entertainment, to bring natural interaction between people and technology to the next level.
